Bratislava, 3 May 2026 – The Mayor of Bratislava, along with the Mayor of Bratislava’s Nové Mesto borough, officially opened a completely new, modern and safe sports hall in this part of the city today. This means yet another promise fulfilled by the city’s leadership, when, after the imperative demolition of the old hall, a clear commitment was made that a new multi-purpose sports hall would be built on its original site.

Said Matúš Vallo, the Mayor of Bratislava:
“I’m glad that despite the complicated financial situation, we are continually able to invest in the development of sports. Proof of this is the construction of a new sports hall in Bratislava’s Nové Mesto borough, which we promised after the city district lost its original hall due to structural problems. We have fulfilled this promise, and I believe that the new sports hall, together with the adjacent outdoor multifunctional playgrounds, will once again become an important point for sports on the map of Bratislava’s Nové Mesto and will serve primarily our children and youth who play sports."
The new sports hall was built on the site of the original hall, which had stood on Pionierska ulica in Bratislava’s Nové Mesto since 1983. Unfortunately, a structural evaluation showed that the original building could no longer be saved. Therefore, the ageing sports hall had to cease its operations in the summer of 2022 and was subsequently demolished. City leaders promised to build a new, modern and, above all, safe hall in its place.
Said Jakub Mrva, Deputy Mayor of the capital city:
“As the deputy mayor, but especially as a Nové Mesto resident and father of children, I’m glad we were able to fulfil this promise. I’m even more pleased that I was present at the start of this project. I know about the problems we faced, how difficult it was to acquire funding for it from the Sports Support Fund, and how much effort other processes, such as obtaining the necessary permits or selecting a contractor, cost."
The result of the project is a multi-purpose sports hall, which, compared to the original hall, has been slightly expanded in the direction of the neighbouring sports complex and now covers an area of more than 1000 m2.
The new hall contains a multifunctional playground measuring 20x36 metres with a preserved height of 8 metres, which also makes it suitable for organising sports competitions or occasional public events.
Just as before, it can serve for several types of sports, including gymnastics, which was originally practiced here, but also basketball, volleyball and, for training purposes, handball or floorball.
Even though sporting successes and victories in the new hall are still a few days away, the building itself has already recorded a success. The new hall on Pionierska ulica won an award in the Public Interior category in the BIG SEE Interior Award 2026 ↗︎ in Slovenia and was also nominated for the main prize of the Grand Prix BIG SEE Architecture Award.
The project for construction of the new sports hall was part of the Comprehensive Renovation Programme of a Primary Arts School and Leisure Time Centre, thanks to which the capital has already invested over 10 million into the reconstruction and renovation of several spaces for students, teachers and in this case also for athletes and their coaches. The Sports Support Fund also co-financed the construction of the new hall.
Concluded the mayor of the Bratislava-Nové Mesto borough, Matúš Čupka:
“I’m really pleased that we were able to return to Pionierska ulica a place that will once again be full of movement, energy and joy from sports. The new hall is not only a modern building; it is especially an investment in our children, youth and the entire community. I believe that it will serve all Nové Mesto residents and will become a natural centre of sports and community life in our city district."
