Acute and emergency medical care

In the event of health-related issues, all citizens of Ukraine have the right to acute and emergency medical care.

Further (necessary) healthcare – when am I entitled to it?

In order to have access to further medical care, you need to already have the official status of temporary shelter-holder or asylum-seeker in Slovakia.

Refugees and asylum-seekers are entitled to necessary healthcare – i.e., also to consultations with general practitioners, vaccinations, or parts of the care for chronic diseases.

This does not include planned care or spa care (e.g., planned hip-joint replacement surgery).

When do I need to register for public health insurance?

In the event that a refugee finds work in Slovakia earning more than the minimum wage (646€):

  1. He or she needs to register for public health insurance. The insurance also covers his or her minor children.
  2. You can select one of the three health insurance companies in Slovakia, (www.vszp.sk ↗︎, www.dovera.sk ↗︎, www.union.sk ↗︎).
  3. File a registration form.
  4. Show them your work agreement.

Public health insurance covers the full scope of medical care – including planned care.

What is the Health Line for Ukraine?

It is designed to provide basic information about the Slovak healthcare system and to consult your health situation with a medical professional.

Speedy consultation in Ukrainian is available for free, every day from 7 am to 7 pm.

The line is not for use as a first aid line. In the event of emergency medical issues, call 155 or 112, or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
