The Bratislava Choir (SZMB) was founded in 1971 at the Municipal Culture and Education Centre in Bratislava as the Bratislava Chamber Choir.

The Balig family played a significant role in its formation.

The first choirmaster was Anton Kállay, who was briefly replaced by Valentin Iljin in 1976. From 1977 to 2021, the choir was successfully led by Professor Ladislav Holásek, who is the father of Slovak choral conducting. The choir is currently led by Adrián Kokoš.

The initial intention was to enable musically talented people to pursue their interest in leisure-time singing activities; thanks to the choir's multifaceted activities, this goal has expanded considerably in its fifty years of existence.

Just ten years after being founded, the choir was already one of the best non-professional choirs in Slovakia.

The choir brings the experience of choral singing to thousands of visitors, and it represents Slovakia abroad. Thanks to the quality of its interpretation and the unconventional approach of its dramaturgy, the choir also significantly enriches musical events in Slovakia.

In cooperation with the Bratislava Cultural and Information Centre, the city published The Choir Bulletin on its Fiftieth Anniversary ↗︎.
