Bratislava joins the World Children's Day initiative

16. 11. 2023

Bratislava, 15 November 2023 – For the first time in its history, Slovakia joins the initiative organised by UNICEF around the globe to celebrate World Children's Day. Iconic Slovak landmarks will be illuminated with blue lights on 20 November to mark the commitment to protect children's rights. Bratislava will also join in the initiative and Bratislava's UFO will be lit up in blue on the eve of World Children's Day.

World Children's Day is celebrated on 20 November each year, marking the day on which the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1989. It is the most important day of the year for children and an opportunity to raise awareness of the most pressing issues facing children around the world.

Many cities, organisations and institutions worldwide will be showing their support for World Children's Day with blue lights on their buildings, monuments and landmarks. In recent years, these have included the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Pyramids of Giza, Chichén Itzá in Mexico and many more. This year, for the very first time, major Slovak landmarks in various cities across Slovakia will be illuminated in blue as a sign of support for the rights of every child.

To mark the day, the Bratislava UFO on the SNP Bridge will be illuminated from 20 November 5:00 pm to 21 November 6:00 am. Other landmarks in Bratislava, such as Bratislava Castle, the Presidential Palace and the Old Market Hall, as well as other buildings across Slovakia will also glow blue.

You can join in the celebration of World Children's Day in Bratislava's Old Market Hall next Saturday (18 November). There will be various activities for children and adults, creative workshops, puppet theatre, interactive games and trivia from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava will also have its own stand at the event to inform more about the City for Children project, which aims to provide a safe, inclusive and functioning environment that allows children to move and play freely in the city. Don't miss this great opportunity to celebrate children's dreams and wishes. Bring your family and friends and enjoy a day full of fun, friendly encounters and experiential exploration.
